Finish dead downwind The bareboat fleets, who have no spinnakers, are racing to the finish line with both sails out on opposite sides to catch the most wind and thereby get the most speed.

Unruly spinnaker While Spinnakers might look nice and certainly give the boat a turn of speed, they can be tricky beasts and once wrapped around the headsail or forestay can be difficult (or impossible) to unwrap.

Wing-on-Wing vs. Spinnaker Those without spinnakers make do by using twin headsails or just sailing wing-on-wing

Coming to the mark The finish buoy was also used as a rounding mark, so we got to see some spinnaker changing and tacking from our vaunted position at the turnpoint.
