The day of departure has finally come! We left the dock in the early hours of this morning and motored the long way up the coast until we made the turn to the southeast and put up our sails and turned off the engine. Despite passing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (well, going over the tunnel portion of it) quite early, it wasn't until the afternoon that we passed the last marker buoy at sea and were outside of coastal waters and well upon our way to distant St. Martin.
The wind was just forward of our beam and we made good speed - zipping along to our crossing of the Gulf Stream and entering warmer waters so that we could peel off all those layers of clothing.

Leaving the Norfolk boatyards behind The military boatyards in our wake, we leave Norfolk to depart on the tide and head for St. Martin in the Caribbean. It is bitter cold and we can't wait to cross the Gulf Stream and land in warmer waters.

Passage day 1 coming to an end The day is waning and there is no sign of land behind us anymore as we head southwest and aim for St. Martin in the Caribbean. There are still 1300 miles to go and there is still a long way ahead of us.
